# Use your own domain

> Show your Launchfolio site at a domain you own, like yourname.com: add the custom domain add-on, connect it, add the DNS records, and go live.

Your site always lives at `launchfolio.live/your-name`. With your own domain, visitors can also open it at an address like `yourname.com`, and they stay on your domain the whole time.

## Before you start

- Your site must be **paid for**. Until then, the **Custom domain** card on the **Add-ons** page says add-ons come with a paid site and shows **Pay for my site**. Free trials can’t add it yet.
- You need a domain you own, bought from a domain company (GoDaddy, Namecheap and so on). Launchfolio doesn’t sell domains.
- One site has one domain. To use a different one, remove the first one.

## Add the custom domain add-on

1. **Open **Add-ons** in your dashboard’s sidebar** — Each add-on has a card with its price and where it stands.
2. **Press **Set up** on the **Custom domain** card** — A set-up window opens with five steps: **Add it**, **Your domain**, **DNS records**, **Review** and **Live**.
3. **Pay for it** — Choose **Pay by card** or **Pay by bank transfer**. By card, the secure card page opens in a new tab; once you’ve paid, the page you came from shows **Thank you! The custom domain add-on is on.** and takes you on to connect your domain. With a bank transfer, the add-on turns on as soon as the money arrives.

The custom domain costs $10 a year. Added partway through your site’s year, you pay now only for the months left until your site renews, and part of a month counts as a whole one: with 6 months left it’s $5. After that, it renews with your site.

> **Close it any time:** Every step is saved. Close the window and press **Manage** on the card later: it opens on the step you’re on.

## Connect your domain

1. **Type it under **Your domain**** — Without `https://`, like `yourname.com`. Under the field you see what else gets sent to your site.
2. **Press **Connect domain**** — The window now shows your domain, its status and the DNS records to add.

*Which address becomes the main one.*
| You type | Main address | Also sent there |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `yourname.com` | `yourname.com` | `www.yourname.com` |
| `www.yourname.com` | `www.yourname.com` | `yourname.com` |
| `me.yourname.com` | `me.yourname.com` | Nothing else: the rest of your domain isn’t touched. |

## Add the DNS records

DNS records tell the internet where your domain points. Sign in where you bought your domain, open its **DNS** settings, and add every record the set-up window lists under **DNS records to add**. Each value has a copy button next to it.

| Type | When you see it |
| --- | --- |
| **A** | For the domain itself (`yourname.com`). Its name is `@`. |
| **CNAME** | For `www` or any other part in front of your domain. |
| **TXT** | Only sometimes: it proves the domain is yours. |

> **What “@” means:** `@` means the domain itself. Some domain companies call the name field **Host**. Copy the values exactly as the window shows them: they come from our hosting and can differ from domain to domain.

Changes can take from a few minutes to a day to show. While the window is open it checks again every 30 seconds, and each record turns from **To add** to **Done**. Press **Check again** to look straight away. The **Connection** box shows each part with a tick once it works, and you can check it at any step, even while we review your domain.

## We look at it, then it goes live

- ****Waiting for DNS**** — Add the records shown in the window. [Done]
- ****Waiting for review**** — Your records work. We look at every new domain before it shows your site. [You are here]
- ****Live**** — We email you and it shows in the bell. Visitors can now open your site at your domain.

Until it’s live, your domain shows a page that says **This site isn’t ready yet**. Your site keeps working at its Launchfolio address the whole time.

*Other things the window can say.*
| Status | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Not approved** | We couldn’t approve this domain. The window shows why, and we email you the reason. | Remove it and connect another one, or reply to our email. |
| **Paused** | We took your domain offline for now, or your custom domain add-on ended (14 days after, if it wasn’t renewed). We email you, with the reason. | If the add-on ended, add it again on the **Add-ons** page: your domain goes back to checking its DNS records. Otherwise, contact support. |
| **Not working** | Your domain doesn’t point to your site any more, usually because its DNS records changed. We email you. | Check the records in the window are still there, then press **Check again**. |

## Once your domain is live

- Turn on **Send my Launchfolio address here** to send everyone who opens `launchfolio.live/your-name` to your domain. Search engines then list only your domain. It can take up to a minute to start.
- Search engines and share cards use your domain as your site’s address.
- The **Share** tab shows your domain as the link to share.
- You still edit at your Launchfolio address and sign in at `launchfolio.live/login`. Opening the editor on your domain takes you there.
- A visitor password works on your domain too.

## Remove your domain

1. **Open **Add-ons**, press **Manage** on **Custom domain**, then **Remove domain****
2. **Confirm** — Your site goes back to its Launchfolio address only. You can connect a domain again any time. Your records at the domain company stay until you delete them there.

**Does a domain cost extra?**
Yes: the custom domain add-on is $10 a year, or the months left when you add it partway through a year. It then joins your renewal. See [Billing and renewals](https://www.launchfolio.live/docs/en/billing-and-renewals). You also pay your domain company for the domain itself.

**Will visitors see a Launchfolio address?**
No. They stay on your domain the whole time, on every page of your site.

**Can I use a domain that already has a website?**
Yes, with a part in front of it, like `portfolio.yourname.com`. Only that address points to your Launchfolio site; the rest of your domain isn’t touched.
